José Antonio Hotel. Meet Adriel Garay; he’s an engaging expert on Peru’s Colonial and Incan history and also deeply knowledgeable about the ceremonies and traditions of the Andes. After time to rest and acclimate to the altitude, join Mr. Garay and your congenial group of fellow travelers to explore the city. Marvel at the fine Colonial-era monuments that grace Cuzco’s Main Plaza. Day 3 - Descend into the Sacred ValleyEnriching exploration into the Colonial heritage and Incan legacy of the Sacred Valley begins this morning with a fascinating visit to Maras, where terraced salt mines have been worked by generations of the same families. Continue to the Terraces of Moray, one of the most intriguing and enigmatic Incan sites in Peru. Here you will see concentric, ring-shaped terraces that descend deep into the Earth, like a giant bowl. Unlike other Inca sites where temples, fortresses and palaces predominate, the purpose of these terraces is not completely clear. Continue your explorations at the spectacular fortress ruins of Ollantaytambo, so well built and strategically positioned that the Incas were able to defend this site against the Spanish in 1537. The ancient stonework here is as fine as any in South America. Then stroll along the narrow lanes of Ollantaytambo, an ancient town where the daily rhythms of life have changed little over the past 600 years. Visit the home of an Andean family here and continue on to your Sacred Valley resort for a restful overnight. The lovely
Sonesta Posada del Inca is set on the grounds of an 18th-century monastery. Meals B,L
Day 4 - Through the scenic Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu #WHS#Your two-day visit to Machu Picchu begins this morning with a scenic rail journey through the Urubamba River Valley - past snowcapped Andean peaks, quiet villages and terraced fields. Explore the mountaintop citadel as Adriel Garay illuminates the history, glory and amazing architectural achievements of the ancient Inca Empire. By special arrangement, witness an ancient Andean ceremony that offers thanks to the
Maker, Mountain and Mother Nature. With his deep personal knowledge of ancient Andean traditions, Mr. Garay will be able to answer your questions about all that you’ve observed and experienced. Overnight at the
Hatuchay Towers. Meals B,L,D
Day 5 - Morning visit to Machu Picchu and back to CuzcoThis morning, you can explore at your own pace through the inviting galleries and cafes of Aguas Calientes. Or take advantage of this free morning and return to Machu Picchu to explore the legendary Lost City on your own - and before the day visitors arrive! Witness the early morning light as it breaks over the mountain peaks to fall upon these ancient stones. Please note that caution is required as the stones and paths can be slippery with morning dew. Take the afternoon train back to Cuzco and return to the centrally-located
Jose Antonio Hotel. Meals B,L
Day 6 - Out and about in CuzcoEnjoy a leisurely breakfast and a free morning to relax or explore as you wish. In the afternoon, rejoin Mr. Garay to continue your exploration of Cuzco’s highlights, beginning with the Temple of the Sun and the imposing Cathedral. Then travel into the rugged hills outside of town to the celebrated Incan site of Sacsayhuaman. With panoramic views over the terra cotta roof tops of Cuzco, this ancient structure was built from massive limestone blocks – cut with such precision that they fit together perfectly like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
Next up is a specially-arranged visit to a local child care center that provides shelter, food and clothing for young children. We encourage you to bring supplies and donations. This experience is an opportunity to “Make a Difference” here in Peru and is one which you will always cherish. Meals B
