Days 1 & 2, Wednesday & Thursday - Depart for Lima, Peru
Depart from home on Wednesday. Arrive in Lima and awaken your sense of discovery. Visit the Spanish colonial heart of Lima. Days 3 & 4, Friday & Saturday - Nazca We travel to Nazca, site of the mysterious Nazca Lines. These geoglyphs are so large that some speculate they were of alien origin, although most agree they were built by the Nazca people between 200 B.C. and 600 A.D. En route, enjoy lunch at Haucachina, a desert oasis built in the 1920s as a French-style luxury resort. In Nazca you’ll see extraordinary exhibits at the Antonini Museum. In the morning, you’ll get a full appreciation of the scale of the Lines during our helicopter flight, before returning to Lima. Days 5 & 6, Sunday & Monday - Lima & Cuzco Perched more than 10,000 feet above sea level, Cuzco’s Incan ruins and Spanish colonial monuments are among the richest in the Andes. Visit the Awana Kancha Breeding Center to learn ancient weaving techniques used for alpaca, vicuna and llama textiles, and enjoy an excursion to the Urubamba Valley, the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Then visit Pisac, a small, sleepy town that comes alive on market day. Days 7 & 8, Tuesday & Wednesday - Machu Picchu & Cuzco This morning we take the Orient Express Vista Dome train to Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of Incas.” Experience this mysterious center of worship that was also an astronomic observatory and a citadel. Relax with afternoon English Tea at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. Continue your explorations through the ruins or hike to Huayna Picchu. Absorb the spiritual experience of sunrise in Machu Picchu. Return to Cuzco by train and visit the Ollantaytambo Fortress. Days 9 & 10, Thursday & Friday - Cuzco & Lima You have another chance to explore Lima’s history or shop its boutiques and craft shops for jewelry, leather, pottery, weavings and soft alpaca wool knits. Visit Enrico Poli’s private collection of rare Peruvian and pre-Columbian art. Also explore the Larco-Herrera Museum, where you’ll view the world’s largest collection of Moche art. Savor your private farewell dinner at South America’s best-preserved colonial mansion, Casa Aliaga, the oldest continually inhabited private mansion in the Western Hemisphere.
